For us this is Saturday mornings. It can be difficult to do with such intense demands on time but I have come to realise it is essential. If we miss this chance for a couple of weeks in a row our house feels less like a home as what we do is increasingly determined by the encroaching piles of Stuff that block our way at every turn. At the end of such a Saturday morning, a casual visitor might not feel that our house lived up to their own definition of clean or tidy, but that is not the point; the point is rather, that it will be as clean and tidy as we as a family feel is necessary and that the way the house is organised will support the way in which we live our family life. Doing this work all together as a family is not at all the same thing as one of you taking the children off to the park while the other “does the cleaning”.
